Our herringbone brick terrace in E8, Hackney.
The houses
Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian terraces.
Hackney has large areas of Georgian and Victorian housing in conservation areas, and Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Victoria Park.
Gardens behind terraces like these are often narrow, so the levels and the drainage matter as much as the paving: a terrace that sheds water and steps cleanly up to the back doors. In the roof, a dormer at the back is usually the way to add a room.
Planning with Hackney Council
Hackney has 35 conservation areas. In Brownswood, Beck Road, Well Street and part of Shacklewell Green some of the usual householder rights have been removed, and De Beauvoir and St Mark's have their own rules on windows, doors, front walls and roofs.
The council's guide to residential extensions and alterations took effect in January 2026.
We check whether your job needs permission before we price it, and if it does, we do the drawings and the application.

Questions
What people in Hackney ask us.
Can you lay brick paving like your E8 job?
Yes. That one was a herringbone brick terrace and alleyway, laid right up to the back doors. We lay brick, block paving and porcelain, with the levels and the drainage done properly.
Do I need planning permission for a loft in Hackney?
It depends on the street. Hackney has 35 conservation areas, and in some of them the usual rights have been removed or there are extra rules on roofs. Outside them, many lofts can go ahead under permitted development. We check before we quote.
Do you do the whole garden?
Yes: patios, terraces, walls, fences and paths, by our own team, with the drainage sorted underneath.
